Best African Destinations for Summer Vacation
By Zaina Adamu
Africa is fast becoming a destination hotspot for many across the globe, offering everything from exotic safari tours to vibrant nightlife, coastal beach getaways and cultural landmarks. There are tons to do on the continent during a summer vacation, so take a look at some of Demand Africa’s top places to visit in Africa while on holiday.
The Moroccan Sahara
The world famous Sahara desert stretches across nine million square kilometres of Africa’s northern region.
One of the most popular places to visit is the Erg Chebbi, rose gold-colored, wind-blown sand dunes rising up to almost 500 feet. Tourists who visit the Moroccan part of the desert are easily taken aback by the endless sea of sparkling sand that changes color from dawn to dusk.
Visitors are advised to visit the “user-friendly” part of the desert from Marrakech then drive to Ouarzazate, a small Moroccan trader town. At night, star gazing is highly recommended at the desert, which is known for having little to no pollution.

Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro
Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest peak and remains to be on the bucket list of the thousands who visit every year. Roughly 45% of climbers successfully climb the dormant volcano, which takes approximately five to nine days to climb.
Along the climb, tourists experience various forms of lush landscapes before reaching the peak, sitting beautifully among the clouds.
Zambia and Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls
Also known as “The Smoke that Thunders,” the Victoria Falls are one of Africa’s most prized landmarks, showcasing astonishing views of endless sprays of water.
After you’ve taken in the stunning scenery, tourists can engage in scores of activities including but not limited to: bungee jumping, gorge swinging, kayaking or take a swim below the waterfalls.
Another popular tourist attraction is the Zambezi River dinner cruise, a four-course fine dining experience under the twilight which takes visitors across the waterfalls shortly after the sunsets.
The Egyptian Pyramids of Giza
The Egyptian Pyramids of Giza aren’t called one of the Seven Wonders of the World for nothing.
The triangular structures were erected some 4,500 years ago on the west bank of the Nile River and have since become one of the world’s most prized possessions for its mysterious and historic past.
If you’re lucky, $50 can get you an eight-hour tour of the site, including a camel ride around the pyramids and a walk through the Valley temple and the Great Sphinx.
Mozambique’s Bazaruto Archipelago Islands
The tranquil islands of Mozambique’s Bazaruto Archipelago feature crystal blue waters that are mainly untouched. The waters surrounded the islands are home to more than 2,000 aquatic species and makes for a tantalizing experience for divers and snorkelers.
After a day of sunbathing on the beach, visitors are encouraged to visit the Bazaruto Marine National Park, which is considered to be “a corner of paradise” with its diverse assortment of wildlife and unblemished nature.
Overall, the islands are best for those who want to getaway, relax, drink rum out of coconuts and eat fresh seafood dinners by the water.
