Top Black Comedy Movies Like Friday

If you are a movie buff, you will know that Friday was a classic stoner comedy from the 1990s. It tells the story of two homies, Smokey and Craig, who have to try to figure out a way to get the money they owe to the dealer whose weed they smoked. To complicate matters, it has to be done by 10 p.m. – that same night. Their consequent antics and tricks are what keep the laughs going during the rest of the movie.

Friday Movie Cast

Friday was directed by F. Gary Gray in his directorial debut. It stars Chris Tucker, DJ Pooh, and Ice Cube who co-wrote the film. The rest of the cast includes Nia Long, Bernie Mac, and others.

Next Friday

For fans of Friday, we recommend catching its sequel, Next Friday. While the general opinion is that it is not as good as the first movie, it does follow up on events and revisits the setting and characters from Friday.

Next Friday was released in 2002 and was directed by Steve Carr, and the cast includes Ice Cube, Mike Epps, Justin Pierce, John Witherspoon, and Don “DC” Curry.

And, if you still want to watch even more of the same, here are just some of the top black comedy movies like Friday we recommend:

Friday After Next

Released: 2002
Director: Marcus Raboy
Stars: Ice Cube, Mike Epps, John Witherspoon, Don “D.C.” Curry
Produced by: Ice Cube, Matt Alvarez

This is the third installment in the Friday series; once again written by Ice Cube. You can expect hilarious antics as the cousins have to track down a robber who breaks into their new apartment they are sharing on Christmas Eve.

Half Baked

Released: 1998
Director: Tamra Davis
Writers: Dave Chappelle, Neal Brennan
Stars: Dave Chappelle, Guillermo Díaz, Jim Breuer

The movie tells the story of three not-so-bright men who come up with a series of crazy schemes to get a friend out of jail. Although what follows is typical pothead behavior, just like Friday, this is a film about friendship. Plus, there are lots of cameo appearances – see if you can spot them all!

Undercover Brother

Released: 2002
Genre: Comedy
Director: Malcolm D. Lee
Stars: Eddie Griffin, Chris Kattan, Denise Richards, Aunjanue Ellis, Dave Chappelle, Chi McBride, Neil Patrick Harris, Gary Anthony Williams

Undercover Brother is a smart and sassy American action comedy (not unlike Austin Powers), starring Eddie Griffin as Undercover Brother, who plays a smooth secret agent-type cat who is out to save the world from the Man. It not only spoofs blaxploitation films of the 1970s, but also the James Bond franchise. Watch out for a cameo appearance by James Brown.

Barbershop: The Next Cut

Release Date: 15 April 2016
Genre: Comedy
Director: Malcolm D. Lee
Writers: Kenya Barris, Tracy Oliver
Stars: Ice Cube, Regina Hall, Anthony Anderson

While Calvin and his long-time crew are still at the Barbershop, the surrounding community has taken a turn for the worse. And that’s not the only change; the once male-dominated sanctuary is now co-ed. However, despite the challenges, the crew comes together to bring some much needed change to their neighborhood.

The Wash

Release Date: November 16, 2001
Director: DJ Pooh
Writer: DJ Pooh
Stars: Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Anthony Albano, Shaquille O’Neal, Tom Lister, Jr. Lamont Bentley, Julio G, and more.

DJ Pooh, who co-wrote Friday, got Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg to portray their own version of Craig and Smokey in this 2001 hip hop styled comedy, which features appearances by Eminem, Ludacris, and Xzibit.

The story is filled with comic tensions, disgruntled employees, kidnappers, ladies in the locker-room, and more. All while differences have to be settled to prevent the good times from coming to an end.
