Learn the Secret of South Africa's Incredible Film Inxeba (The Wound)
Inxeba, or The Wound is set deep in the lush Mountains of the Eastern Cape, where a small Xosha community begins the initiation ceremony for a group of Xosha teenage boys. Male Elders mentor the boys for two weeks during which time they heal after a ritual circumcision. Xolani returns to the mountains each year to be an elder. This year, he becomes an elder for Kwanda, an arrogant son of a wealthy Johannesburg family. The tensions draw unwanted attention to Xolian’s quiet & gentle nature. In an environment of patriarchal traditions and aggressive masculinity, Xolani’s nature is challenged, as he keeps his attraction to men a desperately-held secret. This beautifully acted story was nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category in the 90th Academy Awards as the submission from South Africa. The debut feature film of director John Trengrove was a film festival darling, premiering at Sundance and the Berlin International Film Festivals as the opening film. Inxeba (The Wound) was screened in over 40 festivals worldwide & claimed over a dozen awards. Inxeba (The Wound) is a profoundly moving directorial debut challenging harsh topics & gay life in traditional Xosha culture.
