Inxeba, or The Wound is set deep in the lush Mountains of the Eastern Cape, where a small Xosha community begins the initiation ceremony for a group of Xosha teenage boys. Male Elders mentor the boys for two weeks during which time they heal after a ritual circumcision. Xolani returns to the mountains each year to be an elder. This year, he becomes an elder for Kwanda, an arrogant son of a wealthy Johannesburg family. The tensions draw unwanted attention to Xolian’s quiet & gentle nature. In an environment of patriarchal traditions and aggressive masculinity, Xolani’s nature is challenged, as he keeps his attraction to men a desperately-held secret. This beautifully acted story was nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category in the 90th Academy Awards as the submission from South Africa.
