New Black Movies 2019

African-American movies (think Boyz N the Hood, The Long Walk Home, and countless others) have been highly successful. In fact, the Atlanta-filmed superhero movie, Black Panther, took home no less than three Academy Awards at the Oscars recently! We bet you are excited to know what the new black films scheduled to release in 2019 are? Well, we compiled a list of the new black movies releases for you:

New Black Drama Movies

Native Son

Release Date: April 6, 2019; HBO
Genre: Drama
Director: Rashid Johnson
Cast: Ashton Sanders, Margaret Qualley, Nick Robinson, KiKi Layne, Bill Camp, Sanaa Lathan, David Alan Grier.

The movie is based on the book of the same name by Richard Wright, bringing its interrogation of fear, violence, race, and circumstance into a critical modern context. It tells the story of a young man named Bigger Thomas, who comes from a poor African-American family and lives with his mother and siblings in Chicago. Full of self-determination, Big enters into a seductive new world of money and power after he is hired as a chauffeur for an affluent businessman. But his involvement in an accidental death places him on a collision course with the powerful social forces pitted against him. Native Son premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January of this year.

New Black Gangster Movies

Shaft a/k/a Son of Shaft

Release Date: June 14, 2019
Genre: Action/Crime
Director: Tim Story
Starring: Jessie Usher, Samuel L. Jackson, Alexandra Shipp, Regina Hall, Method Man, Brock Lesnar, Richard Roundtree

The Shaft saga that has been running since the 1970s (yes, the same Shaft that women love and men want to be like) is being continued with the new Shaft movie. Highly anticipated, the plot involves JJ, aka John Shaft, Jr. (Usher), who is a cybersecurity expert with a degree from MIT. However, to uncover the truth behind his best friend’s untimely death, he needs an education only his dad can provide. The legendary locked-and-loaded John Shaft (Jackson), who was absent throughout his son’s youth, agrees to help him navigate Harlem’s heroin-infested underworld. And while there may be clashes between JJ’s regimental FBI training and his dad’s trademark leather-coated-style, there’s no denying family. You will love this movie – like fans say: Shaft doesn’t need superpowers to be marvelous! He is awesome! And this time around it is even better – it runs in the family!

New Black Comedy Movies

Little

Release Date: April 12, 2019; USA Theaters
Genre: Comedy/Fantasy
Director: Tina Gordon
Cast: Regina Hall (Jordan Sanders), Marsai Martin (Young Jordan), Issa Rae (April), Tone Bell (Preston), Justin Hartley

The story is about Jordan Sanders, a take-no-prisoners tech mogul. The “adult” Jordan is played by Hall; while the 13-year-old version of her is played by Martin. Jordan is transformed into her younger self just before a do-or-die presentation. The only one in on the secret is Jordan’s long-suffering assistant April (Issa Rae). Little is an irreverent new comedy about the price of success, the power of sisterhood and having a second chance to grow up – and glow up – right.
